Business ownership can be fun, but it usually isn’t blissful. Even for those of us who are truly passionate about our businesses, we are generally not skipping through the daisies every day. It is hard work to own and operate a business, and it requires getting outside of your comfort zone. When trying to select a franchise model, skills and resources are of little value if the potential owner lacks vision and confidence. Vision allows an owner to see past how things are, to how things should be, and confidence enables them to make it happen. The courage to enter the arena and the tenacity to succeed are what make successful business owners. Goal achievement is what makes happy business owners.
I get to see this unfold, up-close everyday, because we help franchise systems source potential owners for their various brands. Each franchisor has very specific requirements, especially regarding resales, so it is important to get a precise read on the interests and qualifications of every candidate. I am fascinated by the stories, and it is always interesting to see what animates people - or what doesn’t animate them. The striking thing is how many folks are looking for an ideal scenario, instead of a business. Ideal scenarios do not occur very often in business, unless you create them for yourself. In any case, most people have very different ideas about what is ideal.
Now, I am all for getting everything you want, but a business is a tool for making a living, so acquiring one should be approached pragmatically. You are not picking a spouse to whom you will give your unconditional love, until death parts you. You are selecting a tool, as a means to an end. You will need to develop proficiency at wielding it, and over time, the tool may need to be modified, enhanced, or replaced. We need to always remember that the tool is not the objective, it is a method for attaining the objective.
Business owners need to be optimistic, and of strong personal volition, no matter what business model they choose. However, goal attainment is what makes suffering the inevitable slings and arrows of business ownership worthwhile. Accommodating your comfort zone requirements should be a secondary consideration, because selecting a model with the capacity to deliver on your goals should always be your top priority when choosing a business.
